Lessons Learned from the First Commercial MIOTY Roll-out for Smart Buildings in Toronto, CA

BehrTech offers a disruptive wireless connectivity software platform that is purpose-built for massive-scale Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) networks. At the core of the platform is MIOTY, a new communication technology standardized by ETSI that provides reliable, robust, and scalable connectivity unlike any other technology on the market. With its approach to interoperability, BehrTech makes it easy for end users to retrofit its MYTHINGS platform in any environment and enables partners, system integrators, and VARs to deliver fully integrated IIoT solutions that enable data-driven decisions to be made. Occupants’ health and wellbeing have become one of the core pillars in today’s commercial building operations. With indoor environments directly influencing people’s physical and mental states, modern building standards like WELL have been introduced to provide guidelines on how buildings and interior spaces should be designed to advance human health and wellness. Without a doubt, indoor environmental monitoring, especially air quality control, will continue to play a role in reducing disease likelihood and improving occupants’ overall wellbeing. In one of the world’s first commercial MIOTY deployments a group of companies led by one of Canadas biggest property management firms designed, build and installed a MIOTY based sensor network to deliver smart building applications across several multi story commercial towers located in downtown Toronto, CA. Rolling out MIOTY enabled radar-based occupancy sensors as well as air quality sensors throughout the building, the backend system was able to generates new insights in the day to day usage of the building and create essential data for the facility management to increase hygiene standards and mitigate health risks. While focusing on that use case, the presentation will provide a walk through the design, installation and operation of a commercially deployed MIOTY network. It will deliver details on the installed sensor and base station hardware as well as an in-depth view on the network management and backend integration and the overall data flow developed for this commercial installation. Using real day-to-day data collected from this network will allow for an in-depth analysis of the wireless network coverage and the network performance characteristics and will deliver unseen insights into the real-world performance of this LPWAN technology.
