This presentation introduces built-in sensor devices which manage an accelerated cell discharge for a cell undergoing thermal runaway. When triggered by high cell temperature, the device allows safe and high current discharge of the cell. Using this device, battery safety can be increased in all abuse conditions and the reliability of LIBs increased.

Kudakwashe Chayambuka is a researcher at Energy Technology unit (ETE) of the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO) and Forschungszentrum Jülich (IEK-9). He is a Ph.D. candidate at the Technical University of Eindhoven (TU/e) Faculty of Electrical Engineering. He focuses on the electrochemical modeling of sodium-ion batteries and other energy storage systems such as Li-ion and NiMH batteries using MATLAB® and COMSOL Multiphysics®.
