(P11-12) Getting more from GaN: system benefits and trade-offs of power integration

Gallium nitride offers significant advantages over traditional solutions in low- and mid-voltage power conversion, enabling higher switching frequencies, lower switching losses and higher power density. However, realizing the full benefit of GaN at a system level requires careful optimization of the power switch, gate drive, parasitics, protection, and layout. This talk will discuss how different levels of integration, from discrete GaN switches to integrated power stages combining switches, driver and additional functions, can address these challenges. The benefits and trade-offs will be reviewed for applications such as motor drives, robotics, or industrial power conversion, showing how the right level of integration depends on the requirements of the application.
