Edge to Cloud LoRaWAN Enabled Solution for Very Low Power Geolocation

The increasing demand for efficient geolocation and comprehensive asset management is a growing global trend and is often foreseen as a major potential market for IoT across many industries and use cases. However, massive adoption of such solutions has been hindered by the high power consumption and associated cost for current applications. Semtech has developed an innovative application featuring integrated GNSS and Wi-Fi geolocation capabilities to fill this gap in the market. The solution enables energy consumption at a mere 20µWh and 3µWh for GNSS and Wi-Fi scanning respectively. This translates to operation at one tenth the power requirements of competing solutions. For the end user, a 500mAh battery allows GNSS scanning at 30 minute intervals for up to 5 years, and this frequency can be multiplied by 6 for the same period on Wi-Fi. The solution provides the optimal split between low power edge sensing and intensive processing into the Cloud while harnessing the extreme energy efficiency of LoRaWAN®-based connectivity. Wireless connectivity, GNSS and Wi-Fi receivers on a single CMOS SoC offer the highest level of integration. Moreover, communication security is enforced through an advanced crypto engine that stores and manages encryption and decryption such that security keys are never publicly exposed. After a detailed description of the system, this presentation will provide an overview of LoRa Cloud™ technology and services, the next step in the evolution of LoRaWAN networks. An example endpoint-to-Cloud IoT solution will be analyzed, allowing the user to explore the geolocation and device join services, the secure provision system enabling end device onboarding and network join
