Vortragsbeschreibung
Embedded systems supporting aerospace, defense, industrial automation, medical devices, transportation, and critical infrastructure frequently remain in service for 20 to 30 years or more. Yet most embedded engineering processes end at product release or End-of-Life planning, leaving engineers with little visibility into the long-term consequences of their design decisions. This presentation explores the missing feedback loop between embedded system design and the realities of sustaining mission-critical products over decades of operational service. Drawing on real-world engineering experience across product development, manufacturing, test, and long-term lifecycle support, the session examines how seemingly small design decisions can become significant operational constraints years later. Engineers rarely see the final chapter of the products they create: the buyer searching for obsolete components, the manufacturing team preserving undocumented knowledge, the test engineer rebuilding obsolete fixtures, or a design assumption becoming a long-term qualification requirement. Rather than focusing solely on Design for Manufacturability (DFM) or Design for Test (DFT), this presentation expands the discussion to include engineering practices that improve long-term supportability throughout a product's service life. Topics include configuration preservation, documentation quality, manufacturing knowledge retention, test capability, qualification preservation, and design practices that reduce redesign risk while extending the operational life of embedded systems. The objective is not to change how engineers design electronics, but to broaden how they think about the lifetime of the systems they create. By reconnecting design teams with the operational realities that occur years after production has ended, this session offers a practical framework for designing embedded systems that remain supportable for decades.
