Vortragsbeschreibung
As motor drive systems face increasing demands for higher efficiency, better thermal management, and extended battery life in portable applications, Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology emerges as a critical solution. Combined with advanced microcontrollers and system-level software, GaN addresses the growing need for compact, high-performance motor control systems across power tools, outdoor equipment, and home appliances. Developers require comprehensive understanding of GaN's unique characteristics, low RDS(on) properties and low switching energy loss, and how to effectively integrate it in compact motor drive solutions. This presentation discusses on optimal PWM frequency selection, and its impact of system efficiency in motor control. Understanding the interplay between GaN switching characteristics and motor load conditions is fundamental for achieving maximum efficiency gains. Today's technology stack, featuring Infineon's PSOC™ Control C3 microcontroller running FOC up to 100kHz driving a GaN inverter demonstrates potential for efficiency improvements up to 17% over silicon-based solutions. The presentation explores current reference designs for battery-powered applications (BPA) and power tools, along with advanced in-phase current sensing using TMR and HALL technologies. Future possibilities include broader adoption across diverse motor drive applications and continued optimization of the GaN-MCU integration. By fully utilizing GaN's switching capabilities in conjunction with optimized control algorithms and intelligent current sensing, motor drive systems can achieve excellent efficiency levels. Test results across various applications reveal this benefit.
